How to Read the Billing Statement issued by Universities

Too often, students careless with the billing statements they get issued from their universities. For one reason, they don’t really know what all the figures are about. But as an enrolled student, it is your responsibility to know personal charges, credits, or payment accounts enclosed on your invoice.

  1. Statement Date – The date when the statement was created.
  2. Balance – The total amount of charges minus credits for a particular semester. There are also bills that reflect previous or future balances.
  3. Amount Due – The amount that needs to be paid before the due date.
  4. Due Date – The deadline of when the bill must be paid. If the bill is paid after the due date, additional fees or interest may result.
  5. Tuition, Fees, Room and Board – This part shows a summary of all charges for tuition, fees, room and boarding charges, and other fees for a certain semester.
  6. Credits – This section shows the summary of your payments in a given semester.
  7. Class Schedule – This section shows the changes to your class schedules if there are any.
  8. Remarks or Comment – This section is where the cashier notes information regarding the billing statement.
  9. Remittance Form – A detachable portion where you attach payment or check and give to the cashier.

For grant award recipients or students with scholarships from outside institutions, in order for your bill be reduced, universities usually ask for documentation. A guarantee that these institutions will pay some parts of your tuition.

There are also other schools that have electronic bills called e-bills. This electronically generated bills are sent to students monthly notifying them with their latest billing statement. They are sent to the student’s official registered email address. Some can even pay their bills online. A hassle way of managing bills for students.
